The Historian Dilemma: The Idea That What One Can Do with a History Degree is Limited

Many people have the misconception that there is only a few select jobs with a history degree. The main ones that may come to mind are teaching, and something related to archives. Writing books may come to mind as well.

There is so much that having a history degree teaches you aside from history. Yes, history is the main part of the study and degree, but there is a reason why many refer to the history major as "the English major that doesn't want to admit it." You learn how to look at documents on many levels - who it was written by, who it was written for, when it was written, and why it was written. You learn how to present an argument, write an argument, and talk civilly about different historical events, people, and places (for the most part).

Here are some jobs you can get with a history degree:
  • Historian
  • Librarian
  • Archivist
  • Curator
  • Management Analyst
  • Market Research Analyst
  • Paralegal
  • Conservation Scientist
  • Reporter
  • Human Resources Manager
  • Historical Consultant (like for movies/TV shows)
  • Political Advisor
  • Lawyer
  • Diplomat

Here are some people who weren't historians and got degrees in history:
  • John F. Kennedy
  • Richard Nixon
  • Joe Biden
  • Anthony M. Kennedy
  • Sonia Sotomayor
  • Wolf Blitzer
  • Martha Stewart
  • John Lithgow
  • Winston Churchill
